Ryan Coogler never intended to make Sinners sequel
Ryan Coogler always intended Sinners to be a one-off original movie.
Ryan Coogler has no interest in making a sequel to his smash hit thriller Sinners.
The supernatural vampire thriller, starring Michael B. Jordan as twins, has been one of the year’s biggest box office success stories and is the only original movie in the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2025 so far.
While fans have been clamouring for a follow-up, Coogler told Ebony magazine that he “never” considered making more than one Sinners movie.
“I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that,” Coogler explained. “I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique.”
He continued, “I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetisers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention.”
Coogler made a name for himself in 2013 by writing and directing the original movie Fruitvale Station before moving into franchise filmmaking with Creed – a part of the Rocky film series – and the Marvel film Black Panther and its sequel Wakanda Forever.
His upcoming projects include Wrong Answer – another film collaboration with Jordan – and the Black Panther TV spin-off Eyes of Wakanda. He is also believed to be working on a third Black Panther movie.
