Jeremy Allen White lost voice singing Born in the U.S.A. for Bruce Springsteen movie
Jeremy Allen White doesn’t know how Bruce Springsteen has been singing that song for so many years.
Jeremy Allen White got a migraine and lost his voice after spending the afternoon singing Born in the U.S.A. for the Bruce Springsteen movie Deliver Me From Nowhere.
The Bear actor, who plays Springsteen in the upcoming biographical film, admitted replicating the musician’s classic rock anthem challenged his vocals and left him with a raspy speaking voice.
During a Q&A at the Telluride Film Festival over the weekend, White revealed that he saw Springsteen later that day, and the rocker sympathised with his struggle.
“I had spent an afternoon singing Born in the USA, and I got a migraine and I lost my voice,” he said, reports Variety. “I didn’t know how Bruce was still performing this song, or ever performed this song, never mind with two and a half, three hours more of music. And I saw Bruce that evening after I recorded the song, and he said, ‘What’d you do today?’ I said (adopts raspy voice), ‘I recorded Born in the USA.’ He said, ‘Sounds about right. You sound exactly like me.'”
Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere follows the musician as he makes his 1982 album Nebraska. Born in the U.S.A. appears in the film as it was created for that album before being held for Springsteen’s subsequent record, also titled Born in the U.S.A.
During the Q&A, the Shameless actor recalled telling director Scott Cooper that he didn’t know how to sing or play guitar during their initial meeting. However, Cooper “was sure” White was his Springsteen, and the actor spent five to six months preparing for the job.
“I had a great team of people to help me get there,” he stated. “We found it over time, and when I recorded the majority of the album Nebraska in Nashville at RCA (before filming), that was a breakthrough for me. I think I found a lot of confidence in those sessions, which was about a weekend.”
Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere will be released on 24 August.
